Content Information

All modern systems collect, process and transmit information. These operations are often based on the principles of computer engineering, which thus plays its part in developing the foundations for the IT solutions of the future.

The computer engineering programme teaches you about:

  • software development
  • AI methods
  • sensor and actuator technology
  • signal processing
  • embedded system design.

Career Perspectives

karriereperspektive

Our graduates are experts in their field. At Esslingen, we think practice-oriented teaching using real projects is just as important as equipping students with the theoretical knowledge they need.

Get a foothold on your career ladder at an early stage: the integrated internship, well-networked professors and diverse collaborations with partners in industry and research make it easier for you to launch your career in both these areas.

Your career opportunities

Your possible career fields include:

  • Software Engineer - Embedded Systems: develop the Smart Home of tomorrow;
  • Data Scientist/Machine-Learning Engineer: analyse data and predict how machines will perform;
  • Industrial IoT Engineer: network machines and systems to make them available and controllable;
  • Autonomous Driving Engineer: train vehicles to manoeuvre safely without the need for human intervention;
  • Technical Project Manager: lead a team which is responsible for realising technical solutions.

Language requirements: What language is used for teaching?

Our IT Bachelor programmes are taught mainly in German. Selected courses are taught in English.

Foreign nationals with foreign certificates must therefore provide proof of having passed a German test when they enrol for a full-time study programme at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences at the latest. Learn more about Applying with school leaving qualifications from another country.

Exchange students must meet the language requirement of the respective Exchange Programme.

suitability

For whom is the study programme suitable?

Students who are thinking about studying computer engineering should:

  • enjoy finding ways to solve technical problems;
  • be interested in engineering and technology, and enjoy tinkering with machines and trying things out for themselves;
  • want to write their own software and discover how software can be used to solve hardware-related problems;
  • be able to think outside the box, consider the bigger picture, and be good at finding new ways of solving problems.

This awaits you

The broad-based foundation courses in software engineering, computer science and mathematics form the basis for your future career. You can then pursue your chosen specialisation by taking electives such as autonomous systems, cyber-physical systems or artificial intelligence.

What are autonomous and cyber-physical systems? Machines or programmes which operate almost by themselves are known as autonomous systems. When the software/hardware interaction is (partly) autonomous, this is known as a cyber-physical system.

Students of Computer Engineering tinker with some hardware.

Solid basis

“Computer Engineering is the link between hardware and software. I think that’s even more important today than it was then, because everything has a micro controller in it somewhere. In the coffee machine, for example, there is a micro controller with a small display that has to be programmed. On the other hand, electronics are also in there, so you need the basics that are taught in the degree.”

Highly in demand

I am technically inclined and have a great interest in technology and computer science. So I chose this degree programme also because it has a good connection to hardware, as it is an engineering degree programme. I can work in many companies here in Esslingen and the surrounding area because it is a very sought-after degree programme. You have good access to industry, to many engineering and computer science professions.
