The MateROV-World Championship

The MateROV-World Championship is an international competition in Canada. International teams design, build and test an ROV in order to fulfill specific tasks at the competition. The yearly-changing tasks always refer to topical issues in the ocean — from installing offshore solar panels, cleaning wind turbines, and counting endangered animals, to automatic 3D-model generation of corals. Most tasks are remotely controlled (team cannot see into the water), but some are autonomous.

What is an ROV?

ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) are submersible robots that communicate with the water surface via a long cable and are controlled from there.

ROVs are currently used in science, industry and the military — for maintenance and inspection work in the offshore sector, exploration of ecosystems and harbours, and cleaning.

By using ROVs, boat crews and divers are less likely to be exposed to risks.

The Disciplines

🌊  Product Demonstration

In a race against time, the ROV must complete as many tasks as possible in the swimming pool.

🎤  Engineering Presentation

During an oral presentation, the team convinces the jury of the robot and its features.

📋  Technical Documentation

Written documentation covering the ROV, design/manufacturing processes, and team management.

📣  Marketing Display

Creating content that presents and 'sells' the ROV to judges and the public.

🏢  Company Spec

Each team enters as a company. The Company Spec Sheet presents the team and the robot.

🤝  Corporate Responsibility

Mentoring students, engaging the community, demonstrating the ROV at public events.

🛡️  Safety

Passing on-site safety inspection, maintaining a safe workspace and conducting safety analysis.
